[TN-Bird] Royal Tern - Dacus Bar - Memphis

July 26, 2008
Dacus Bar
Shelby Co, TN

Here's an unexpected bird for the area. My third record for TN and there are
probably less than 5 records total and this is the second for Dacus Bar
where an adult fed an immature bird after Katrina. Two little slips of sand
have
now appeared across from Mud Island as the river is dropping almost a foot a
day.

Sitting in with a flock of 22 Forster's, 1 Common and 5 Least Terns was a
slim built, large tern sporting a thin, plain tipped, orange bill, long
necked,
with a white crown and forehead plus a shaggy black crown behind the eye. In
flight the bird had light upper wings and the underwings showed only a faint
dark trailing edge unlike the dark on the primaries of Caspian. I could not
believe my eyes but immediately knew I was looking at a Royal. I've got poor
but IDable photos. I called a few people but everyone was tied up.

You might expect a storm assisted bird but?? why here? Why now?
Good Birding !!!

What is this feathered thing that lifts my heart to the heavens.
