TN birders,
Today at 1PM, while trying for my year Northern bobwhite, I had a Ross's
Goose with about 15 Canada geese. Going north on Hwy 11, turn right on hwy
163(in Calhoun after crossing the bridge), heading toward Delano. After
crossing
the intersection with Co road 750, continue on east, looking for county road
967 on the right. Turn here, and in less than a mile, you will come to two
ponds on your right. The birds were near the brush pile in the field closer
than the closest pond. The Ross's was VERY skittish, and flew into the
closest pond even though I was setting up the scope on the opposite of the
vehicle. Scope views revealed the squared head, no grinning patch, and small
size.
This road is the most reliable place to get Northern bobwhite in the county
that I have found, but no luck today. Also, got my FOY loggerhead shrike
on county road 603 near Schultz Farm. This is off county road 750, a
connector road between hwys 163 and 30(road between Athens and Etowah).
Those that try for this bird, I would appreciate info on this bird and
other birds in the area you encounter. The two above birds plus three wild
turkeys that flew across hwy 163 on the way home made the year list at 103 for
