Re: Ray Cook of Sevier county (865-453-7496) has a Ross's goose as well as a
Richardson's goose on his pond in northwest Sevier county.

I went to check out the Ross's Goose off US 411 east of Sevierville and saw one
white goose along with the "Richardson's" Canada Goose. I had never seen a
Ross's, but this goose was considerably larger than the Richardson's and the
bill shape appeared more like the Snow's I have seen. It had virtually no grin
patch on the left side, but the right side seemed to have more. The bill
appeared long, curved toward the rear and not bluish at all. Although the head
was completely white, it didn't appear as rounded as I would have expected in a
Ross's. Unless there had been Snow there along with the Ross's (which had since
left), I believe at best it might be a Ross X Snow hybrid.
Hopefully someone more experienced with the Ross's can check this out.
Thank you,
Tom Howe
