Obion County, Lake County, and Gibson County
At 1:30 pm this afternoon a single immature ROSEATE SPOONBILL was present at
the wet pool on Hwy. 157 north of Walnut Log in Obion County. This is a few
miles north of the Reelfoot NWR headquarters and a couple of miles south of the
KY state line. The area is on the south side of the highway. I checked this
area twice yesterday and saw no spoonbills.
There were several Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, and Snowy Egrets feeding
here as well. Also present were a few adult and immature Little Blue Herons,
notable in that there have not been many around in NW TN this year. A couple
of Greater Yellowlegs were feeding along the shoreline. The spoonbill was at
the far north end of the pool where the trees are.
At Tiptonville Bar on the Mississippi River at Tiptonville Landing in Lake
County there were dozens of Least Terns and among them I found a single PIPING
PLOVER and two Sanderlings as well as several Pectoral and Least Sandpipers.
At the Ibis Hole in Lake County there were a couple of Greater Yellowlegs as
well as many Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Great Blue Herons, and a few Little
Blue Herons. Also present were several Canada Geese and Mallards. A few
Pectoral Sandpipers and a couple of Spotted and Solitary Sandpipers were
present around the edges of the pool.
Mississippi Kites have become more common here in Gibson County this summer and
this afternoon I had one on Hwy. 45W just north of Trenton. Last week I had
10 feeding over a field along Hwy. 104 just west of Trenton.
Good birding,
Mark Greene
