[TN-Bird] River Travelers - Memphis

Oct.28-29, 2008
Mississippi River
Shelby Co. TN

Short morning and afternoon visits produced more birds following or riding
the river south. Flocks of 24, 220 and 360 White Pelicans were photographed
lazily drifting south in the air, while large flotillas of Coots escort
Gadwall,
Shovelers, Green-winged Teal, Ring-necked, Lesser Scaup and Ruddy Ducks
floated past Mud Island. Twelve Pied-billed Grebe and two more Horned Grebes
were
seen Wednesday. Skeins and groups of over 500 DC Cormorants have been
counted over the last two days. Greater White-fronted Geese were heard twice
but
the high flying flocks snuck by undetected.

Two Peregrine Falcons now can be found with one usually sitting on Dacus Bar
and the other, holding sway on the upper end of Loosahatchie Bar. Almost
every morning that I've been able to get down early the last week, a
Red-shouldered Hawk crosses the river to the Loosahatchie Bar and Cooper's
Hawks skirt
the trees heading south.

Only Herring Gulls have been seen lately flying non-stop south, usually
singles or sometimes two but no big movement. Totals for the last few days only
 8
immature birds and 3 adults. Slowly the numbers of Great Egrets dwindle while
Great Blue numbers remain the same. The only shorebirds have been scattered
Killdeer and a single Spotted Sandpiper.

Waiting for the weather to change and the Big Push.....
Good Birding !!!
