Saturday's NTOS Field Trip to Wheeler NWR in Alabama drew 19 members and
guests, who saw impressive numbers of Sandhill Cranes, waterfowl, and
the bonus of a VERMILLION FLYCATCHER.

The day started at the Wheeler Visitor Center Observation Tower. The
display pools were filled with large numbers of ducks, with Mallards the
majority. Good numbers of Northern Pintails, American Wigeons, Northern
Shovelers, and Ring-necked Ducks were present, along with smaller
numbers of Hooded Mergansers, Common Goldeneye, Gadwall, American Black
Ducks, Lesser Scaup and American Coots. The fields were filled with
Canada Geese and hundreds of Sandhill Cranes, feeding in easy view
distance.

Along the White Springs Dike Road, there were good numbers of
Canvasbacks, Lesser Scaup and Buffleheads. Several Bald Eagles,
Wilson's Snipe, Savannah Sparrows, Winter Wren and the wintering
Vermillion Flycatcher were among the other highlights of the Road.

Limestone Bay had very high water levels, which eliminated any mudflats.
A huge flock of Snow Geese was in the center of the bay. A Bald Eagle
got the flock in the air, and we were treated to a long and noisy flying
display by the flock before they settled down. A pair of Forster's
Terns was also notable.

In all, 83 species were observed on the field trip.
