The Hiwassee CBC was held on January 1 with 19 participants in 8 parties.
The weather was beautiful (high 68 degrees), in fact probably too warm with
one of the lowest species counts in many years. The ninety-five species were
well below last years total of 105 which is a much more expected result.
Some of the highlights included:

1 Redhead - always a tough species on this count

12 Bald Eagles - an average number for this CBC

1 Merlin - this bird was found at Blythe Ferry and the species is almost
annual now

14610 Sandhill Crane - above average count.

1 Whooping Crane - apparently this bird is #107 from the 2001 batch, it has
been present at Blythe Ferry for awhile

7 Least Sandpiper

19 Dunlin

3 House Wren

4 Purple Finches

Misses:

No Snow, White-fronted or Ross's Geese

Northern Bobwhite -getting more difficult every year (was seen in count
week)

Barred Owl - never easy

Loggerhead Shrike - seemed like a slight come-back over the last couple of
years, none this year

Palm Warbler - had not missed this species in several years

Rusty Blackbird - species declining everywhere

Thanks to all who participated!!
