[TN-Bird] Report on Herndon field trip

Sunday, 12 SEP 2004, the Lee & Lois Herndon (Elizabethton) Chapter of TOS
held a field trip to Winged Deer Park and Austin Springs in Johnson City, TN.
At
8 in the morning six observers found their way through patches of heavy fog
to Winged Deer Park: Gilbert Derouen, Jackie Hinshaw, Don Holt, Rick Knight,
Larry McDaniel, and Charles Moore. Even before the fog lifted, passerine
migrants were lively, and so were communications between birders as we
struggled to
keep up with the action. Highlights included a Red-headed Woodpecker, both
Philadelphia and Warbling Vireos, and nine species of warblers (we jokingly
complained of too many Blackburnian Warblers distracting us from the other
warblers). One non-avian highlight for those who stayed until the end of the
morning was a River Otter swimming past the boat ramp. Bird species seen at
Winged
Deer Park were:

Great Blue Heron
Mallard
