[TN-Bird] Red-throated Loon; Henry Co 11-18-08

Britton Ford, Paris Landing, Eagle Creek, Port Rd area
I spent the afternoon on KY Lake again. Highlights were a Red-throated Loon
from Port Rd, calling Sandhill Cranes from Britton Ford, and the 1st Goldeneyes
of the season at Paris Landing. Hoped for a Scoter, but still no luck there.

Britton Ford was still pretty quiet. No geese today at all, and the only
shorebirds were 30 Snipe and a bunch of Killdeer. Lots of Ruddies and other
divers out at the edge of vision, but few birds in the bay yet where the
observation deck is. A few Red-breasted Mergansers were visible from here.

Paris Landing was quiet as well. Not many gulls in the area, and nothing
unusual. Bufflehead was the most numerous duck here, with 300+ around the area.
Eight Common Goldeneye were new for the season. Only Scaup I saw here were a
flight of 10 Lessers.

Eagle Creek had a few Least Sandpipers, and one Western, among the Killdeer and
dabbling ducks on the flats there. Lots of Bonies and a handful of Forster's
Terns.

It was getting late when I got to Port Rd; but I counted 188 loons from here,
most just shapes in shimmer. One bird was close enough to ID as a snake-necked
Red-throated Loon, my 1st of the year. This bird was back towards Pace Point,
and as usual for Red-throated, wasn't with one of the big lines of loons, but
by itself. A quick run to Trailer Rd at last light produced 122 loons, so over
300 loons in the area again.

Good Birding!!
