A few minutes ago I drove by Mary Vestal Park on Blount Avenue in Knoxville. I noticed a red-shouldered hawk fly up from the ball field onto the chain link fence. It perched there facing the road and appeared not to care that I was practically stopped in the road watching it. I pulled into the parking lot to avoid getting rear-ended and as I was watching the bird calmly observe passing traffic, I noticed another red-shouldered on the fence on the opposite side of the field. When I returned about 15 minutes later they were both still there on the fences opposite each other, but the first bird was now facing the field. The bird on the far side dropped down onto the grass and back up to the fence but didn't have any prey. I watched them for about ten minutes from the church parking lot across the street. Gotta love urban wildlife. This is an area that has been torn up for sewer line construction for months now. It looks like they're mostly done but heavy equipment still passes right by within less than 50 feet of the fence closest to the road. They were still there when I left.
