Hello Birders, Tarcila Fox was brave enough to allow "not-long-from-the-hospital" me to accompany her on a trip to Hohenwald today where we found the redpoll around 1 PM. Michael Todd posted earlier photos which well depict what was seen, and my photos do not improve on his one bit. This little bird was a "lifer" for Tarcila and me, so was a welcomed sight. This species has eluded me in the far North for much too long, but I never expected my first one to be in Tennessee. Many thanks to Betsy Russell for allowing our visits and to Bill for letting everyone in on the "secret.". On the way over, we counted 23 flickers. We started counting the species after seeing an initial flock of nine birds just as we entered the Natchez Trace Parkway. On the way back, we did not exceed that number.........only had 8. Had two flocks of turkeys; one of about 35 impressive birds; another with a bird of weird coloration. I'll try to post a picture of it when I get to where I can use all my equipment to "show it off" better. Other observations included 3 pileated woodpeckers, several red-tails including one photographically cooperative one, 2 deer, 1 skunk out walking around in broad daylight, and a "road kill" vulture. Hmmmm. What cleans the roadside of THEM??????? It was a good trip and a nice venture outside for this old girl who has been cooped up for a long spell. Thanks,Tarcila, for "springing me" for a nice birding trip.
