Kingston Steam Plant
Roane County in east Tennessee
After having to postpone a BBS route because of rain and the threat of more
rain, I headed instead to TVA Kingston (That's what they call it on their
signs, not Kingston Steam Plant, which is what birders have always called it).
Of note were three BLUE-WINGED TEAL on the large pond. More unexpected was the
lone male REDHEAD sitting on the shore. I'm sure there are very few records of
this species at Kingston, and probably none for the summer.
Also seen/heard:
At least 5 OSPREY (including two young in a nest) were seen, with 3 nests in
the area, including one in a dead tree. Nice to see Osprey nesting in a tree
instead of a man-made structure.
NORTHERN BOBWHITEs were calling pretty much continuously during the 2-3 hours
I was there.
WILLOW FLYCATCHER
Lots of CLIFF SWALLOWs.
BLUE GROSBEAK
ORCHARD ORIOLE
No sandpipers, but a couple dozen KILLDEER were present.
No Grasshopper Sparrows were found.
