Hi folks,
This is a request on behalf of Great Smoky Mountains National Park's
effort to better catalogue data on birds.
I am assisting park ranger Paul Super in creating "virtual type
specimens." Rather than document birds the old way (with a shot gun)
we are trying to capture and band each species. In addition, we are
photographing them and removing 2 retrices (tail feathers) for DNA
work.
Currently, we do not know of a reliable location to try for Red
Crossbills. We are particularly interested in this species because
of the currently vague taxonomy. Some researchers have suggested
splitting this into multiple species, and it is unclear exactly which
type(s) breed and/or winter within the national park.
If you become aware of a spot where we may be able to capture this
species, please let me know.
Thank you
Charlie
