[TN-Bird] Rather strange and wonderful afternoon at Norris

Spent the afternoon (1 p.m. - 4:05 pm) before Christmas (Dec. 24) at the Norris
Songbird Trail (Anderson County, TN) and had some memorable experiences. One
of the first birds I saw was a male hairy woodpecker and one of the last as I
returned to the parking lot was a winter wren, slowly working its way through
some of the last remaining brush at the top of the river bank. It was even
close enough for me to snap a picture.

The strange part was 3 diving ducks that turned out to be MALLARDS! 2 males
and a female repeatedly diving and staying completely submersed for 7 seconds
(yes, I timed them). Must have been something good down there. The coot a few
feet away was not diving.

Here's what I found:

Canada Goose 28Mallard 18 (3 divers; 15 dabblers)Great Blue Heron
2Turkey Vulture 1American Coot 1Belted Kingfisher 1Red-bellied

7Carolina Wren 5Winter Wren 1Golden-crowned Kinglet 3Ruby-crowned
Kinglet 2Yellow-rumped Warbler 3Eastern Towhee 2Field Sparrow
6Song Sparrow 8White-throated Sparrow 5Northern Cardinal 5American
