[TN-Bird] Rankin cormorants

There were more than 300 double-crested cormorants roosting at Rankin Bottoms
in Cocke County yesterday evening. That figure is more than double the
previous high count. There appeared to be several distinct flocks; some may be
in migration.

Douglas Lake is at 990', close to the maximum summer level and too deep for
much shallow-water foraging. We didn't see any shorebirds, nor the variety of
ducks we saw just a week ago. There were more prothonotary warblers, and
eastern kingbirds have returned, but no egrets or green herons yet.

A pair of great blue herons is building a nest opposite the mouth of McCowan's
Creek. A gaggle of Canada geese were partying heartily all the while, then
noisy pairs flew off to their private rendezvous' at sunset.
