[TN-Bird] Rankin black tern etc.

Saturday morning, 4/29/06, we led a Boy Scout group on a canoe float from 
Rankin Bridge to the coal tipple at Rankin Bottoms.  The weather was 
overcast and windy; lake now at 987' +.  Swallows were in the air 
everywhere, Canada geese sounded off all around the bottoms, ducks dabbled 
along the grassy lakeshore, and buzzards, crows, ospreys and eagles feasted 
on the carp crowding the shallows.  Shorebird numbers were down from last 
week, but songbirds were more plentiful.  We recorded a total of 61 bird 
species, including:

Wood duck (28)
Blue-winged teal (37)
Northern shoveler (3)
Redhead (5)
Ring-necked duck
Double-crested cormorant ( 80+) - 2 in nests opposite McCowan's Creek
Great blue heron (41) -24 in an unusual fly-by flock; 4 nests opposite 
McCowan's Creek
Great egret (6 seen in a quick visit on 4/28, 1 on 4/29)
Green heron (3)
Osprey (7) one occupying a GBH nest from last year (total of 4 osprey nests 
now at Rankin)
Bald eagle (6, all immatures)
American coot (24)
Greater Yellowlegs (6)
Lesser yellowlegs (5)
Sollitary sandpiper (3)
Spotted sandpiper
BLACK TERN
Chimney swift
Eastern kingbird (4) - one in a nest doomed to go under when the lake rises 
to summer pool
Red-eyed vireo
Tree swallow (100+)
Cliff swallow (300+)
Barn swallow (50+)
Blue-gray gnatcatcher (7) - one nest, above summer pool, near the tipple
Cedar waxwing (50+)
Yellow-rumped warbler (5)
Prothonotary warbler (9)
Common yellowthroat (3)(FOS)
Yellow-breasted chat(FOS)
Orchard oriole (3)
Baltimore oriole
