Lots of birds and birders at Rankin Bottoms in Cocke Co, TN this afternoon (8 Sept). Most of the recent good birds were seen including Hudsonian and Marbled Godwits, 2 Red-necked and 1 Wilson's Phalaropes, American Avocet, and Red Knot. I ended up with 22 shorebird species and others may have found more. We also had great looks at a Peregrine Falcon (chased by a Cooper's Hawk) and a Merlin stirring up the birds. Red Knot and Wilson's Phalarope were at the pond at the end of the road with lots of Blue-winged Teal, yellowlegs, and other shorebirds. Birds were moving through the cockleburs and took patience to find. Many shorebirds allowed close approach along the lower road bed. Later I had 2 Laughing Gulls, 11 Common Terns, 1 Forster's Tern, and 5+ Caspian Terns at Dutch Bottoms along with several Ring-billed Gulls, Great Egrets, Semipalmated Sandpipers, Greater Yellowlegs, etc. Highlights, with estimates and some exact counts, Scott Somershoe might have better totals from Rankin: At Rankin: Blue-winged Teal, ~100 Northern Shoveler, ~10-15 Cooper's Hawk, chasing the Peregrine Peregrine Falcon Merlin Killdeer, ~10 Semipalmated Plover, 15+ Black-bellied Plover, 5 American Avocet, 1 Hudsonian Godwit, 1 Marbled Godwit, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, maybe 5 or so Lesser Yellowlegs, 50+ Spotted Sandpiper, at least 1 Ruddy Turnstone, 2 Red Knot, 1 Short-billed Dowitcher, ~12 Long-billed Dowitcher, 1 Pectoral Sandpiper, 20-30 Least Sandpiper, 20+ Semipalmated Sandpiper, 100+ Western Sandpiper, 10+ White-rumped Sandpiper, ~12 Stilt Sandpiper, ~20 Buff-breasted Sandpiper, 1 Wilson's Phalarope, 1 Red-necked Phalarope, 2 swimming and spinning across from the point Black Tern, 1 100s of swallows, mostly Tree, some Barn and Bank At Dutch Bottoms along Hwy 25E (Cocke / Jefferson Co line): Laughing Gull, 2 Ring-billed Gull, ~40 Caspian Tern, 5+ scattered along the lake Common Tern, 11 Forster's Tern, 1 Dean Edwards Knoxville, TN Sent from my iPhone =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER==================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
