Rankin Bottoms, Cocke county, July 10, 2011, 6-8:30 PM; by canoe Douglas Lake elevation: 992.6 (the lake has been higher than normal since late March, probably the reason that wader and shorebird numbers have been lower than normal) Right after launching, we spotted a raptor flying low across the Tipple Pond. White uppertail coverts, overall buffy tone indicate a juvenile Northern Harrier - unusual to see any harriers this time of year. Partial list: Wood duck (30+) Double-crested cormorant (ca. 60, 5 nests) Great blue heron (12, 3 nests) Great egret (45) Green heron (9) Black-crowned night heron (8, 1 juv.) Osprey (9, plus 3 nestlings) N. Harrier Prothonotary warbler (5) Michael Sledjeski Del Rio TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER==================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
