Boyd Sharpand I birded Rankin Bottoms Friday evening, 8/15/08, from about 5
to 7:45 PM. We stopped at Dutch Bottoms on the way to Rankin; little
visible from the highway except about 20 Great Egrets and 4 Great Blue
Herons. After arriving at Rankin, we met Beth Schilling and the 3 of us
birded together from land. Almost all of the shorebirds were seen from
along the road past (west of) the tipple on the peninsula to the north.
Incomplete list:
Wood Duck - 5
D-c Cormorant - 10
Great Blue Heron - 40
Great Egret - 160
Little Blue Heron - 20, all imm.
Green Heron - 5
Black-cr Night-Heron - 10
White Ibis - 1 imm, seen about 5:45 near the eastern end of the old RR bed
exposed at low water
Black Vulture - 5
Turkey Vulture - 10
Osprey - 5
Red-tailed Hawk - 1
Peregrine Falcon - 1 imm, first seen by Beth near eastern end of old RR bed
exposed at low water. Later we all watched it through scopes for over 20
minutes until it flew off to east. During this time it was on ground on the
exposed peninsula between the channel near the road past the tipple and main
river channel to the north. It spent a lot of time hopping around,
repeatedly picked up, chewed on, dropped what appeared to be a Corbicula
clam shell. It aso picked up an 8-10 inch long plant stem and tore it
apart. It occasionally pounced on other objects we could not identify.
Semipalmated Plover - 2
Killdeer - 400
Spotted Sandpiper - 1
Solitary Sandpiper - 1
Greater Yellowlegs - 1
Lesser Yellowlegs - 2
Least Sandpiper - 60
Unid. peeps - 100+
Pectoral Sandpiper - 60
Ring-billed Gull - 1
E. Kingbird - flock of 15
Baltimore Oriole - 2
