[tn-bird] Radnor Lake luck declines

Wednesday 22 May, another beautiful morning

This was my last outing at Radnor this spring. Tomorrow I head for a
meeting on La Palma, Canary Islands, which are off the coast of Africa.
By the time I return in June it will be summer as far as I am concerned.

Again this morning birders from across the state (W. TN, Knoxville,
Chattanooga) as well as a few locals (about 10 people in all) converged
on Radnor Lake.

When I pulled into the West Parking Lot at 7 am and got out of my car, I
heard a CONNECTICUT sing twice from across the road in thick cover. I
headed toward the dam where I met several locals and Mike Todd. Jay
Desgrosellier already had a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER near the Old
Visitor's Center and Dam.

Most of us decided to take our warbler chances on the walk to Long Bridge.
At the "Artist and Teacher" bench we found other birders and heard a
MOURNING WARBLER sing a couple times. Unfortunately, that was the
best we could do for both Skulkers. This area did produce another
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER (probably the same one as yesterday)
as well as a stunning male BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, male SCARLET TANAGER,
and a VEERY. We spent most of our time wandering back and forth between
there and Long Bridge but did not hear another CONNECTICUT or MOURNING
singing, let alone see one.

When we finally walked back to the dam around 9:30 am, we were all
treated to relatively good looks at a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, likely
the one that Jay had seen earlier.

We spent some time listening for the CONNECTICUT in the parking lot area
but by the time I left at 10 am it had not been heard again.

Despite spending little time at several of the better Radnor locations
for warblers in general, I still had a good showing of species. However,
it is clear that warbler diversity and numbers are on the decline.

Warblers:
Tennessee 1
Northern Parula 1
Yellow 1
Chestnut-sided 1
Magnolia 6
Blackburnian 1
Blackpoll 3
Prothonotary 2
Connecticut 1
Mourning 1
Canada 3

Other migrant of note:
Philadelphia Vireo 2
