[TN-Bird] Radnor Lake Summer Tanager buzzed by Hummingbird

Radnor Lake State Natural Area
Nashville-Davidson Co. TN
25 May 2007
-
I went for a hike a Radnor Lake around noon today. Because of my late start, I
was not expecting too much action. And aside from the usual mid-day Red-eyed
Vireos, Acadian Flycatchers and others that sing though the heat, there was not
a lot.
However, on the road between the East Parking Lot and the lake, a Summer
Tanager was singing incessantly. He was hidden in the foliage, so when Ranger
Brian Becker drove up, he saw me looking up and straining to see the unseen
bird. Suddenly, it moved a bit, so that we both had it. It was a first year
male with its red head and yellowish body.

Suddenly, a hummingbird came out of nowhere and began to buzz the ever-singing
Tanager. The hummer darted back and forth, up and down, harassing the Tanager,
which never stopped singing. This lasted a full minute or so.

Finally, I guess he had enough annoyance from the Hummingbird, as the Tanager
flew out and up further to an adjacent tree.

The hummingbird did not pursue.
