From the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership website:
Sandhill cranes (from last year's migration study):
Sandhill cranes No.'s 4, 8, 11, 12, and possibly 9, that were led on the
2000 fall migration by Operation Migration's ultralights, were reported at
Hiwassee Refuge in Tennessee on Jan. 22. along with ~10,000 other sandhill
cranes concentrated in the area. The report of OM # 8 was most unexpected
because that bird has been missing since last winter at St. Martins, Florida.
On Feb. 2 Richard Urbanek flew an aerial survey of major sandhill crane
wintering areas in north/northcentral Florida and Okefenokee. He found
sandhill crane #5 in Tsala Apopka Lake wetlands just east of Inverness,
Citrus Co., Fla. It was reported on Feb. 4 that sandhill crane #8 was at
Jasper-Pulaski in Indiana. This report in addition to the report from
Hiwassee on Jan. 22 confirms that this bird is indeed still alive after
being out of contact since last winter when it was at St. Martins, Florida.
Sandhill crane #4 was at Jasper-Pulaski on Jan. 31.
On Feb. 10 sandhill crane #5 was still at in Tsala Apopka Lake wetlands just
east of Inverness, Citrus Co., Florida.
At Jasper-Pulaski in Indiana sandhill crane #4 was reported on Feb. 10, #8
on Feb. 11, and #11 on Feb. 12. Several thousand cranes have arrived during
the past several weeks, and many cranes have also departed during the past
week. Weather has remained unseasonably warm with no snow and all water open.
