During the last few days when it was too hot to do any birding, serious or
unserious, some of us in the NW part of the state were out anyway checking the
usual places. Sunday six of us covered Island 13, White Lake, Highway 103 and
Great River Road and Highway 79W. Monday, Tuesday and today Glen Criswell and
I covered the same area.
The number of shorebirds in the Reelfoot Lake Area has been increasing steadily
for the last 8-10 days.
Last Saturday, one field just west of Great River Road in Lake County had at
over 600 shorebirds consisting of Pectorals, Least, Stilt, Semipalmated
Sandpipers and Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs along with a few Semipalmated
Plovers,
Island 13 has been slow but since this weekend there were a great deal more
birds there and the habitat is much better than it has been as the river has
dropped. Today, the entire area was covered with birds, including the Island
side which is much easier walking than on the east side of the water.
Black-necked Stilts have had a successful breeding season in Dyer and Lake
County. We are finding a number of them on Highway 79W, Great River Road and
Highway 79 area, 103 and Great River Road and White Lake. The total on any
given day has been 45-65 birds with many of them juveniles.
Shorebirds recorded include, Both Yellowlegs, Least, Pectoral, Western. Stilt,
White-rumped, Buff-breasted, Semi-palmated, Solitary, Spotted, Sanderling,
Upland Sandpipers, Common Snipe, Both Dowitchers, and Black-necked Stilts.
Other birds of interest Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night Herons, a good
number of Blue-winged Teal, and Northern Shoveler.
Many areas are drying up again including most of Highway 103 and Great River
Road which will be gone after this week as will be the area at Great River Road
Mile Marker 18.5. White Lake is well overrun with water as is the Bogota unit
of TWRA. The TWRA has worked hard to get these areas in shape for next week's
shorebird workshop.
I will try give a complete summary update after this weekend's tally.
