Thanks Bob and Chuck for the quick, detailed, and very enlightening replies to
my question. Strangely enough, as I recall, Polk County is one of the areas
where I looked (along with Tom Laughlin and Fred Alsop) in the late 70's and
don't recall finding any. I do remember relatively large, very remote areas of
what I would call pretty marginal habitat in the Jellico area on the Cumberland
Plateau. I sometimes look up along the ridgetops in parts of southwest
Virginia and northeast Tennessee where isolated stands of scattered large pines
are still found and wonder if are or ever were red-cockaded's there. I guess
reading about all this business of searches for the Ivory-billed Woodpecker
reminded me of how difficult it is to find something even when you're pretty
sure it's there.
