Ensley Bottoms,
Shelby Co. TN
I met Mike Todd at the pits today and we enjoyed some great Wind Birds. Only
15 species were seen but in the mix were; 3 immature Wilson's Phalarope, 2
adult breeding plumaged Ruddy Turnstones and a molting adult Baird's Sandpiper.
The numbers are still up in the thousands but they have shifted. A good
percentage of Black-necked Stilts have left along with most of the Lesser
Yellowlegs
and Stilt Sandpipers. Least Sandpipers have increased but Pectoral, Western
and Semipalmated Sandpipers have decreased. Just before the rains came down in
full fury we searched for Buff-breasted but the roads kept us from a few of the
better Buffy areas.
The variety of colorations on the immature Westerns and Semipalmated
Sandpipers can keep you busy for hours just admiring the extremes. Sadly the
numbers
of Least Sandpipers is still very low while Pectoral young are like looking for
a needle in a hay stack; we only saw 4 today. Maybe the front will change
things but they just did not do well at all this breeding season.
We did photograph Tennessee's 2nd documented Mottled Duck on TVA Lake but
that's another story.
Good Birding!!!
