All, This has been an excellent thread on this subject, with good information and comments from professionals and lay persons, but it sounds like we are back to square one. It sounds like emergency measures are needed to protect the remaining quail population, and attempt a restoration. Therefore my recommendations: 1. Halt bobwhite quail hunting, at most an on/off year rotation until numbers stabilize. 2. Habitat restoration, intensive PR blitz from TWRA & Farm Bureau etc.with habitat recommendations for farmers and land owners. Educate and enlist the help and cooperation of quail hunters, they no doubt already know there is a problem. 3. Intensive survey, have up to date data; enlist the help of TOS if necessary, TOS members would be happy to do targeted roadside surveys, and/or private land surveys where recommended. 4. Establish a fund dedicated to NOBO restoration to which two cents or two hundred could be donated (there may already be a bobwhite license plate). It would be nice to be able to do something, other than admit nothing can be done to stop the slide toward extirpation.
