Hi friends, Since things seem to have slowed down in Tennessee, I'll bring you up to speed on seasonal happenings here at St. Paul Island in Alaska's Pribilof Is. (in Bering Sea, north of Aleutians). I have been working here as a birding tour guide since mid May (I was here in 2002, also). Lots of tour groups and independant birders have come through seeking local seabirds, rare migrants, and Asian vagrants. So far it has been a good year. Here is a partial list (all are illustrated in the Nat'l. Geographic field guide): Tufted Duck Gyrfalcon Pacific Golden-Plover Com. Greenshank Wood Sandpiper Bar-tailed Godwit JACK SNIPE (5th N. Am. record) Com. Snipe (not Wilson's) Slaty-backed Gull Com. Cuckoo Siberian Flycatcher Gray-spotted Flycatcher Siberian Rubythroat Eyebrowed Thrush Olive-backed Pipit McKay's Bunting Brambling Toss in regular breeders like Red-legged Kittiwake, Least & Crested Auklets, Horned & Tufted Puffins, and Red-faced Cormorant. Cool, cloudy, windy days are typical. Rookeries of Northern Fur Seals, occasional whales, and a carpet of wildflowers add to the fun. No biting insects!! Hope that you are having a good summer, too. See you in September.
