[TN-Bird] Possible Allen's Hummingbird

Dan Jacobson and I received a late afternoon report of a hummingbird in
southwest Bradley County today. We arrived at the location at approx. 5:00 PM
and
quickly had a selasphorus hummer. We observed the bird off and on for the
next 20 minutes, with scope views from 60 ft., and our conclusion, with the aid
of only a Nat. Geographic, was an immature male Allen's Hummerbird. The bird
has an all green back, rufous in the tail, lots of flaking on the throat with a
large central spot, and plenty of rufous on the flanks. However, upon
arriving home and looking in Sibley's, the illustrations for female Rufous and
female Allen's look very much like the bird we observed.
The hummer is at the home of Bill Brock at #633 Brock Road in SW Bradley
County near the community of McDonald, TN (DeLorme p.25). Directions are from
I-75 Exit 11, Ooltewah. Go east on Lee Hwy. (US11 & 64) for 6.2 miles and turn
right on McDonald Road, stay on McDonald Road going south, crosses RR tracks,
for 1.5 mi. to Brock Lane (angles off to left) and go 0.7 mi. to Brock Road.
Go straight (or slightly left) and the mailbox will be immediately on the
right. It's a long gravelled driveway. Park in front of the garage and stay
close
as the bird seems quite skiddish. Mr. Brock welcomes birders and there is no
need to call. Be considerate of the time and absolutely NO DOGS! The bird
has been there for at least a month and comes to the feeder frequently. His
phone number is 423-472-3950, if you fill a need to call.
