Sunday morning I had two Pine Siskins with15-20 American Goldfinches feeding on
the ground under my feeders at Bear Run, Jonesborough,Washington County. I've
tracked their appearance across the state, with the most recent sighting in
Knoxville, but now they've finally made it to East Tennessee.
The fact they are ground feeding right after I filled the feediers indicates
these birds might hail from someplace where they don't have feeders. This is
right on the heels of a major blizzard in the Great Lakes area, but with
temperatures here in the 50s-60s all week and just starting down today. Not all
is ill that blows on a north wind, although their last invasion here in the
early 1980s accounted for at least 100 pounds extra on the birdseed bill, back
when a 50 lb bag of black oil sunflower cost about $11. Â
