Oct. 24, 2009 Pickwick Dam Harden Co. TN Not a lot of birds but super selection with another pair of immature Eared Grebes. Through the years of finding Eared Grebes in West TN, I've never seen more than one at a time over here; now two pair in one week. Two Common Loons, 31 Pied-billed Grebes, lots of Coots, 1 Ruddy Duck, 5 Pintails and a few Mallards were all I could find scanning all day........... There were 2 Caspian Terns, an adult that continually fed an immature, and a single Forster's Tern on the lake side of the dam. There were only about 250 gulls seen today with 95% of those on the locks and moorings above the dam but two fine birds greeted me this morning feeding below the dam, a single 1st winter LAUGHING GULL and an adult THAYER'S GULL. I've seen very few (or at least picked few out) adults in years of searching in TN. Two more immature THAYER'S were photographed in the afternoon above the dam; one with very pale primaries and the other a standard issue. Six FRANKLIN'S GULLS were seen together in the afternoon but singles and doubles appeared off and on all day. Four LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 2 adults, a strange/huge 3rd cycle bird and a 1st winter bird all seen above the dam with 3 in view at one time. Lots of adults and immature Herring and Ring-billed and I waited till dusk wishing for a Bony but no gull species number 7;o( Pretty good line up for early in the season. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
