[TN-Bird] Pellisippi State and Blount County

11/22/04, afternoon
North and west Blount County

Hi folks,

On my way back from visiting with kids from Episcopal School of
Knoxville, I decided to stop at a couple birding spots, since Allan
was asleep. I went by Pellisippi State Tech College in west Knox
County, but could only find KILLDEER, GREAT BLUE HERON and 52 CANADA
GEESE.

I stopped at Louisville Point Park where the BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCHES
immediately made their presence known. A PINE WARBLER and a
WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH joind a horde of CAROLINA CHICKADEES and
TUFTED TITMICE up in the pines. On the water I could only locate a
handful of PIED-BILLED GREBES and a GREAT BLUE HERON.

I continued on to Ish Creek, where I was surprised to find no less
than 80 BONAPARTES GULLS and at least 35 PIED-BILLED GREBES. There
were also 7 RING-BILLED GULLS and a smattering of GREAT BLUE HERONS.
There were also a good number of KILLDEER out on the exposed mud.
Twice I though I spied a tern, but both times I had obstructed view
and couldn't locate it. I may have just had funny looks at Bonys,
but if you're in the area, keep your eyes open for a possible tern.

Phelps Pond had BELTED KINGFISHER, GREAT BLUE HERON, MALLARDS,
KILLDEER but nothing exciting.

Back at home in south Blount County we've heard the GREAT HORNED OWL
a couple times. Today I saw a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK carry a female
NORTHERN CARDINAL away. Heavy load for the little guy.

In my freezer I have, well, you know...

Good birding!
