We are still struggling with peeps at too great a distance, even with good =
scopes. Several sources suggest that Least Sandpipers are more likely aroun=
d here in December than Semipalmated (O'Brien et al, Shorebird Guide, Pete =
Dunne's Essential Companion, Birds of Nashville Area etc) at inland sites a=
nd in small groups. Once I determeined the birds on the east side of the La=
guardo Lagoon (seen from the old dead-end road east of 109) to be Least, th=
is year that area was too flooded but we saw 20 or more at the Gallatin Ste=
am plant feeding on small exposed patches of mud. We could not see yellow l=
eg color, and we failed to really note the way they were moving. We differ =
as to how much of the breast was streaked - looking at O'Brien et. at later=
suggested that is not too reliable anyway. Are the yellow legs usually re=
adily visible in full sun but at a distance? Our (unofficial) Christmas cou=
nt will have to report them as un ID's unless anyone can suggest anything f=
rom experience around this area or even specifically at the Steam Plant. Th=
anks. Ralph and Kay Brinkhurst Lebanon, Wilson Co.
