Virginia Fairchild and I confirmed the presence of a male Painted
Bunting this afternoon - Sunday, March 30 - in Farragut in West Knox
County. On the afternoon of Thursday, March 27, the bird was first
discovered by Ann and Tom Nelson at a feeder in their backyard. They
reported their Thursday sighting to me on Friday but did not see the
bird again until today.
Their neighbor also saw the bird. She described it as the bird of seven
colors.
Virginia and I and Dean Edwards looked for several hours this afternoon.
Finally as Virginia and I were about to give up we spotted the red bird
with the blue head in the top of a Bradford pear about 5:40 pm. We
watched and photographed the bird for 20 or 25 minutes.
It certainly was a colorful spectacle perched against the background of
the white Bradford pear flowers.
I think this is the second record of a Painted Bunting in Knox County.
