10/18/02 Pace Point Area Henry/Benton Co.
10/19/02 Britton Ford & Port Rd. Overlook Henry Co.
I spent a few hours each on the past couple of days covering the local
hotspots, (excuse being trying a out new spotting scope). Nothing great but
definite signs that the season is indeed changing.
Yellow-rumped's are of course everywhere, from the woods to the stubble
fields. Still a few mixed flocks of warblers about, with Palm, Bay-breasted,
TN, Orange-crowned, Magnolia, and Common Yellowthroat also being seen. I
didn't walk the LeConte's field, but still had 9 species of sparrows over
the course the two days, including Lincoln's, Vesper, White-crowned, and
Savannah. The areas that lately have been teeming with Indigo Buntings
lately are still teeming, only with sparrows now. A few Indigo's are still
about though.
The first few loons are showing up now, with 8 in view yesterday afternoon
from Port Rd. Pied-billed Grebes are rafting up, but I couldn't locate a
Horned. Diving ducks are still scarce, and I was unable to relocate the
Black Scoter from earlier in the week at Britton Ford. I did have my 1st
group of Scaup from Pace Point, and Ruddy Ducks are definitely in the area.
My 1st nice raft of dabbling ducks was seen yesterday afternoon from the
boat launch at Britton Ford, with several hundred birds present. Joining the
Mallards were good numbers of Gadwall, Northern Pintail, and American
Wigeon, with a few Black Ducks and Green-winged Teal scattered in as well.
Gull-watching produced no surprises, but it's good to finally see several
Bonaparte's back in the area. They were joining their Ring-billed brethren
in the pursuit of Forster's Terns, which are still all over the area. The
only other tern was a distant Caspian. Gull numbers are still on the rise,
with a lot of Herring's in the area, including several youngsters.
There are enough birds in the area that with a little more time to look a
good bird will definitely turn up.
Good birding!!!!!
