Pickwick to Pace Point
At Savannah, TN on Saturday at noon, a kettle of 4 Red-tailed Hawks had one
adult dark morph in the mix. The farther you get away from the Mississippi the
harder these boys are to find. I got a couple of flight shots.
At Gray's Cemetery at the east end of the Paris Landing Bridge, I heard a
flock of chortling Sandhill Cranes heading north, I never got a visual on
numbers
but it didn't sound like too many.
If you are up at Paris Landing always check out the little island to the east
where the gulls roost. Three of the last four times the Peregrine Falcon has
been sitting on the concrete block, like a king on his throne.
At Britton Ford the geese numbers are up since hunting is over. There were
200 Greater White-fronted in with the Canada Geese, a high number for me there.
A lone Ross's Goose, late Sunday at Oneal Lake, hiked the waterfowl species
number to 22 for the weekend. All 3 species of mergansers were found with a
single hen Common seen at Pace. Large groups of head bobbing, neck stretching
Goldeneye were treats along with the huge numbers of Red-breasted Merganser
males
also in the throes of impressive mating rituals. Green-winged Teal numbers
have swollen big time. Pods of Pied-billed and Horned Grebe are growing with
birds scattered all around the Point.
Big Sandy Flats yielded my only Least Sandpipers for the weekend with a flock
of 17 zigzagging in flight across the mud flats while Snipe pumped and
Killdeer strolled.
Only a dozen Bald Eagles came to roost at Big Sandy, I saw no Golden but did
not stay until dark.
Good Birding!!!
