Greene County: Paint Creek Recreation Area (PCRA) and environs; Wal-Mart
Distribution Center (WMDC); miscellaneous back roads
I observed the following today:
Gadwall (17);
Northern Shoveler (20, at 3 sites);
Northern Pintail (WMDC);
Green-winged Teal (16);
Ring-necked Duck (13);
Wild Turkey (35);
Cooper's Hawk;
Wilson's Snipe (12);
Common Raven (2, PCRA, flying in tandem, with one bird carrying a large portion
of food);
Brown Creeper;
Winter Wren;
Golden-crowned Kinglet (6);
Ruby-crowned Kinglet (2);
American Pipit;
Orange-crowned Warbler (WMDC, third pond; very unlikely winter find);
Swamp Sparrow (5, WMDC);
Dark-eyed Junco (12);
Purple Finch (2).
I found the Orange-crowned Warbler in the cattails in the eastern end of the
third pond at WMDC and got an excellent brief look with binos from no more than
fifty feet. The bird was quite gray, with little or no yellow other than in
the undertail coverts. OCWA is an early spring migrant, but it seems unlikely
that a bird in late February would be a migrant, so I wonder if perhaps this
individual has overwintered in the area. Whatever the case, it was a great
surprise.
