[TN-Bird] Olive-Sided Flycatcher

Saturday May 27
Eagle Pass Trail
Cheatham Wildlife Management Center

This afternoon I took the 5 mile round trip hike on the Eagle Pass trail
which is the unpaved northern part of the Bicentennial trail in Ashland
City. Besides several Prothonotary Warblers, Acadian Flycatchers,
Summer Tanagers and Cliff Swallows, the bird of greatest interest was an
Olive-Sided Flycatcher which gave prolonged direct views of his white
throat and central white belly streak while he continually sallied for
insects from an exposed central snag. This trail is bordered by fairly
steep cliffs on one side and a densely wooded under story situated
against the Cumberland River on the other side which is a habitat they
have been know to favor.

I would recommend this trail but not at this point in time due to the
number of ticks I found on my body when I returned to the car and then
again at home. Nonetheless other birds of interest included Great
Egrets, Wood Thrush, Yellow-Throated Warbler, Eastern Pewee, and several
White-Eyed Vireos.

This trail is part of a "Rails to Trails" project that begins in Ashland
City just north of the Deerfield Inn on Hwy 12. Turn left onto
Chapmansboro Rd. and approx. 1/4 mile is the parking lot for the Marks
Creek trailhead which begins the 4 mile trail section which precedes the
2.5 mile unpaved section which I was on today. Presently there are
plans to extend this trail to the Montgomery County line which would
make it an 11 mile trail in the Cheatham Wildlife Management area.

Have a good weekend birding.
