Thanks to all who replied regarding the roosting height/location of the
Northern Saw-whet Owl. As Jan indicated, Rob and I were able to find an
owl roosting 15 feet up in a maple tree out on a branch that was
overhung by cedar branches. The owl was located about 4 feet from the
cedar trunk, and completely visible. I found the owl by first noting
fresh droppings, then searched around the tree until I found the owl.
The owl was completely visible.
We then re-visited the nearby Long-eared Owl site, this time we were
able to find all five owls that roost there.
Both owl roosts are near Carlyle Lake, which is approximately 4 1/2
hours north-northeast of Nashville in Central Illinois. A Mew Gull has
been seen there this past weekend, but we were unable to locate it.
Carlyle Lake sees many rarities, last winter a Say's Phoebe over
wintered. This fall, all three jaegers were present, and an Ancient
Murrelet was spotted for a couple of days there as well. Dan Kassenbaum
birds the area most every weekend, and has an excellent site with
reports and history:

We also visited the Riverlands Environmental Demonstration Area near
Alton, Ill. This Corp of Engineers site, partially in Illinois, mostly
in Missouri just north of St. Louis is an excellent place for waterfowl,
gulls and eagles. We had 30 Trumpeter Swans, all three mergansers
(including 75 Common), many Common Goldeneyes, Canvasbacks, Buffleheads,
and many other more common waterfowl. Also seen was a flock of 40
American Tree Sparrow, and about 30 Bald Eagles.
If anyone would like specific directions to either place, please let me
know.
