[TN-Bird] No luck with Chestnut-collared Longspurs today

12/24/08
Donald Rd area of Black Bayou
Lake Co

I spent almost 4 hours looking for the Chestnut-collared's today, arriving
just after the torrential rains that came thru yesterday thru this morning.
The field just north of Donald Rd, which is where the Chestnut-collared's
were being seen, is largely flooded a good ways out in the field. Birds are
still using it, but nothing like they were over the weekend, except way out
in the field. Most birds seem to be staying in the Black Bayou fields on the
other side of 213, or farther down Donald Rd. They aren't coming right over
the top of you like they were a few days ago though. I looked at a LOT of
birds farther down Donald Rd, where it looked like the corn field was full
of mice scurrying around.

I didn't hear or see anything that looked suspicious in the Laps I saw or
looked through, but they could have come by 10 times and if I didn't hear
them probably wouldn't have known. I think the problem is short-term, as the
water should quickly get back out of the fields. Hopefully the
Chestnut-collared are still there, just in a little different routine. The
ditches with the taller grass are all flooded now, which is where I had
hoped to concentrate part of my search. Still just as many Laps in the area,
a cloud of them, so hopefully their guests are still there as well.

Definitely bring a rabbit's foot or something with you, these birds could
take a little more luck than usual!

Good Birding!! and Happy Holidays!
