After getting off work this morning, I made a quick trip north to the
Reelfoot area, with a few stops along the way, but nothing of interest other
than Lapland Longspurs in small numbers practically anywhere I stopped in
suitable habitat. No Snow Buntings though. Jeff's call of a Tufted Duck back
in Arkansas almost turned my car around, but today just wasn't a good day
for that. When I got to Reelfoot, the scene had changed quite a bit from
last Sunday when I was there. The recent rains have filled many fields in
the area, so that there is water everywhere. The impoundment that I took my
photos of the White-faced last week, is totally full now, with nothing but a
few Coots and Pied-billed Grebes. The other location for the Ibis, Herron
Rd, was full of birds, but no Ibis. I didn't spend very long looking before
fatigue forced me to make the trip home while I still could.
Keep your eyes open, it's shaping up to be a strange winter! A Ross's Gull
has shown up at, of all places, the Salton Sea, for CA's 1st record; quite a
setting for an arctic species of gull.
Good Birding!!
