[TN-Bird] No. Goshawk - Cackling and Ross's Geese - Memphis

Nov. 26, 2008
Shelby Farms, Colonial Golf Club
Shelby Co. TN

Today at Shelby Farms, I found the injured Ross's Goose that has been
present for 2 weeks and its leg is much better. It has now attracted 3 Snow
Geese
for company. After all the geese moving for the past few nights and right on
time, 3 Cackling Geese have also appeared in with the resident Canada Geese.

Later, I was visiting a friend at his home on the Colonial Country Club golf
course. He was not feeling well and was resting on his bed, next to a
picture window looking out into some trees. He asked me what that big bird with
 the
long tail was but I could not see it from my view point. When I moved, I
found that an adult NORTHERN GOSHAWK was perched on a dead limb, in the sun
and
at eye level. He kept saying how big the bird was and how long the tail
looked; I kept saying look at the white line over the eye and the black cross
bars
on its chest. After the bird flew, I measured the distance and found the
bird had been sitting just 85 feet from us.

My friend is not a birder, I told him there were 3 accipiter species that
could be seen around here and showed him that page in my field guide; he
immediately pointed to the Goshawk and said that's it. I walked around looking
for
the bird but was unsuccessful. I told them to keep an eye out and call if it
returned. It was by far the best look I've ever had of an adult of this
species, anywhere!!
Good Birding !!!
