[TN-Bird] New Wind Bird Returns plus aerial dog fight

July 14, 2009

A quick turn about the "Pits" found more birds set down by bad weather. A
slightly molted breeding plumaged Stilt Sandpiper and a heavily marked
female Spotted Sandpiper were among new finds but the Short-billed Dowitchers
and Semipalmated Plover had evidently headed south. The numbers of Least
Sandpipers had more than doubled and one flat held 11 Pectoral Sandpiper plus
more Western and Semipalmated Sandpipers.

The equipment and work being done on the levees at TVA Lake has kept the
Black-bellied Whistling Ducks at bay but I did see one hiding in the weeds at
the pits but I did not have time to look for others. Two sets of young
Western Kingbirds are still being fed at nests on President's Island but no
Scissor-tails were found.

I watched as a soaring Red-tailed Hawk was set upon by a Cooper's Hawk,
while the latter was being dogged by an Eastern Kingbird and a Chimney Swift
circled above the swirling group egging then on.
Good Birding !!!
