[tn-bird] Re: Need advice with hornet problem

Thanks for following up on this problem.
This insect does not have the elongated abdomen of sphecid wasps. It is 
'fat-looking', resembling the shape of carpenter bees, bumblebees, digger 
bees, or hornets.  It has transverse yellow bands around its abdomen (I think 
hornets just have the yellow at the tail, but I don't know how many variants 
there are). It's about an inch long.

The pod (my term) was whitish, opaque, not hard (unsure about making the 
statement 'soft'), about 1/4 inch (?) in diameter, and was not attached to 
anything.  I can't remember if it was just lying on top of the chickadee 
nest, or if it was partially buried.  In any case, it was easy to find and 
remove.
