[TN-Bird] Natural Areas Week Hikes for West Tennessee

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Division of Natural
Areas will be leading walks/hikes into many of the State Natural Areas from
April 7th through April 13th. For information, including descriptions,
directions, and maps regarding these hikes visit the Division of Natural Areas
web site at: www.tdec.net/na.

As of February 1st of 2008, I have taken the position of Stewardship Ecologist
for the West Tennessee area. I will be leading the following hikes:

Hike at Carroll Cabin Barrens State Natural Area (in Decatur County north of
Savannah, TN) on Saturday April 12th. Meet at the parking area at 9:00 a.m.
Central time. Contact Allan J. Trently at 731-512-1369 or at
Allan.Trently@xxxxxxxxxxx no later than April 10th. We will hike a moderately
strenuous 2.5 mile loop along wooded ridges, limestone barrens and cedar glades
on the west bank of the Tennessee River. The area should be good for some
early migrants. A bald eagle is known to nest in the area, in fact I saw an
adult eagle flying over Carroll Cabins on Wednesday (March 26). For plant and
butterfly lovers, this place is amazing in the summer and fall. On April 12th
most of the barrens plants will not be in bloom so there won't be many
butterflies so take note. Unlike the glades in the Central Basin these barrens
are on ridgetops which offer some unique ecological study.

Hike at William B. Clark Preserve State Natural Area (in Fayette County outside
of Memphis) and Ghost River Natural Area on Sunday April 13th. Meet at the
parking area for the William B. Clark Conservation Area located one mile north
of Rossville on Highway 194. Contact Allan J. Trently at 731-512-1369 or at
Allan.Trently@xxxxxxxxxxx no later than April 10th. We will take a leisurely
walk along a 1600 foot boardwalk through bald cypress-water tupelo forest.
From the W.B. Clark Preserve we will head west to the Ghost River Natural Area
near LaGrange. We will stop for lunch along the way. At Ghost River we will
walk a loop trail, which includes a 600 foot boardwalk through cypress swamp.
Besides birds, we hope to see snakes, dragonflies, damselflies, and identify
some of the plants along the way.

Hope you can attend. Again for more information visit www.tdec.net/na.Allan
