[TN-Bird] Nashville CBC results

The Nashville CBC was held on Saturday, December 15 and provided some
exciting finds for the group despite gloomy weather. Our total of 73 species
was a
little better than last year's 70, but lower than most recent years. Two
adult Whooping Cranes with colored leg bands and transmitters, and 2 Greater
White-fronted Geese, both found at the Bells Bend route by Phillip Casteel,
Gary Casey and Mark Hackney, were firsts for our count circle. And 8 flying
Snow Geese were spotted at the Hidden Lakes section of Harpeth River State
Park
by Melinda Welton, Jan Shaw and Bill Riner, a rare species for the count.
Linda Kelly added 1 Merlin and 1 Loggerhead Shrike in the Bells Bend area on
Sunday, which will be added as Count Week species. Radnor Lake provided 11
waterfowl species including 145 Gadwalls, 7 Canvasbacks and 2 Redheads. All 3
local owl species were recorded, with Warner Parks having 3 Barreds and 1
Eastern Screech-Owl. Northern birds were well accounted for with 1
Red-breasted
Nuthatch, 8 Purple Finches, and 32 Pine Siskins. Six Yellow-rumped Warblers
were our only warblers, but we had 9 sparrow species including our only
Chipping Sparrow (1) at Harpeth East, and 10 Fox Sparrows. Robins, blackbirds
and grackle numbers were quite low. Thank you to all the many participants
who
braved far less than ideal conditions, and to Susan Hollyday, who hosted a
delicious chili supper for our compilation.
