[TN-Bird] NW Blount County

northwest Blount County
2/19/06

Hi folks,

After our trip to Kyker Bottoms (will post on that later) I got a
voice mail about Tom's luck yesterday. I raced home, got Tracey and
Allan, and tried to find the goose, which would be a lifer for both
of them.

We had similar numbers on all species:
At Phelps: 10 Redheads, 12 Ring-necked Ducks, 2 Bufflehead females,
4 American Wigeon. No crane, though I've seen it there 3 times
recently. I haven't noticed the broken bill. There were only about
6 Canada Geese, and no Greater White-fronted.

The Stilt Pond had just Mallards.

Hitch Pond had 165 Redheads and one female Northern Pintail (I'm
guessing the one Tom had at Phelps).

On the way home we stopped at the north end of Miser Station Road,
where it crosses a broad expanse of mud (winter) or water (summer)
depening on season. There we found 20+ Great Blue Herons, 1 Great
Egret, and 37 Sandhill Cranes. The cranes seem to like this location
this year. Although this time, unlike others, the cranes were to the
east of the bridge (left, coming from Lousiville Road) whereas
they've been to the west, or right in the past.

We didn't see Green-winged Teal at any location, though they were at
Kyker this morning.

Yesterday, there was one GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE feeding among
Canada Geese adjacent to Phelp's pond where the heronry is located.
Also
present were 50 REDHEADS, 15 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 1 female PINTAIL, 2
BUFFLEHEAD females, and 3 AMERICAN WIDGEON. One lone SANDHILL CRANE
wasalso seen, unfortunately with an apparent broken upper mandible.
On the "stilt" pond down the road were 3 WOOD DUCKS, 2 GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, 2 GADWALL and numerous MALLARD. On down at Hitch pond were 175
REDHEAD
huddled together, by far the biggest concentration I have seen in the
area.
