[TN-Bird] NW Blount Co. and Kingston Steam Pl.

Tn-birders,

Yesterday 4 of us birded Loudon Dam, Chota Wildlife Refuge area in Monroe Co.,
and NW Blount Co. Is was very cold in the morning so we didn't start until
about 0930. There were many gulls at the dam but we couldn't find any BOGU's
(Bonaparte's) or Herrings; Ring-billeds only. Chota was not very productive
either, with the lone exception of about 25 Common Loons. After an excellent
lunch at Los Amigos in Maryville, we found a group of 20 Sandhill Cranes on the
water near the junction of Topside Dr. and highway 334. We then went to the
Louisville park area where we finally saw 4 BOGU's. After that we drove to the
end of Lowe's ferry road, where we encountered as many gulls as I have ever
seen in this area. We conservatively estimated 500+ BOGU's and 3,500+ RBGU's.
On the way back out on Lowe's Ferry Rd., we found 3 Vesper Sparrows at the
junction of Lowe's Ferry and the Windy J subdivision road.

This morning we went to Kingston steam plant (Roane Co.), arriving about 1020.
I was surprised to find very few waterfowl. All we had were 5 Gadwall, 4
American Coots, and a few Mallards. NO other ducks at all. The saving grace was
a lone Herring Gull. Walking back along the west embankment (after circling the
main ponds), we found a single Horned Lark, a single American Pipit, and a
single Palm Warbler.

Great birding to all,
Ron Hoff
