[TN-Bird] NTOS field trip results

3-22-08
Mill Creek Greenway
Percy Priest Lake
Davidson Co.

NTOS members enjoyed a beautiful sunny day birding at two very different
spots. In the morning we checked out Mill Creek Greenway, which was new for
many in the group. The paved trail runs along Mill Creek with open fields and
sparse trees on the other side. Highlights for this area included 2 FOS Palm
Warblers, several Tree Swallows, a confiding Eastern Phoebe, many singing
Field Sparrows, and a small heronry which had about 6 nests with a few Great
Blue Herons present. We also visited Hamilton Creek and Elm Hill marinas, the
dam and Anderson Rd. Recreation Area, all on Percy Priest Lake. Gorgeous
breeding plumaged Common Loons and Horned Grebes stole the show there, with at
least 50 loons present, and some quite close. There were also 21
Double-crested Cormorants, several Ring-billed and 1 Herring Gull, both
kinglets singing
on the Anderson Rd. trail, and a singing Brown Thrasher. The Merlin, often
seen there, was not present at Anderson Rd. Another Great Blue heronry was
seen from the dam, this one on a point at Nashville Shores. There were at
least
10 nests there.
