About fifteen or so observers, including from as far away as Maury,
Kentucky, attended this morning's NTOS field trip to Radnor Lake. I
believe that all went home happy. The three target species were
MOURNING and CONNECTICUT WARBLERS, and YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, and
all three were recorded.
At least 4, and possibly as many as 6, CONNECTICUTS were singing at
various places ranging from the Spillway Trail next to the west parking
lot to the Long Bridge. Everyone got at least a passable look at one or
more of the birds, many observers got great looks, albeit briefly, and
it was a lifer for several. The YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS were much
less cooperative. Two to three were present near the long bridge. I
heard one "che-bunking" a couple of times when we first arrived, but
except for one bird that was giving the pewee-like call almost nonstop
for significant periods, they were silent and stealthy. A few were
lucky enough to see one, but most had to settle for learning the call.
MOURNING was least cooperative of the three. Only a few late arrivers
managed to see a non-singing bird near the parking lot.
Other interesting sightings:
3 TENNESSEES
4 MAGNOLIAS
2 CANADAS
2 BLACKPOLLS
1 WILSON'S (in stealth mode with one of the COWAs)
Later in the day, while playing golf out at Harpeth Hills, I found a
WILD TURKEY feeding in the middle of the 2nd fairway.
