Radnor Lake State Natural Area Nashville-Davidson Co. TN Wednesday 28 April 2010 The fine weather bought 25 birders to Radnor Lake this morning for some pretty good birding. As we were gathering in the parking lot, a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, a rare sighting at Radnor Lake, flew high overhead. We got all but one expected vireo species and both YELLOW-THROATED VIREO and BLUE-HEADED VIREO gave us opportunities for good looks. Warbler species were also well-represented (13 species), including 7 NASHVILLE WARBLERS, outnumbering even the YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS. BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS were singing again after their absence last week. The LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH that has in past weeks cooperated so well by the Long Bridge was in full view again today, even signing from the ground. A pair of SUMMER TANAGERS perched high in a fully-blooming Honey locust Tree--the red and yellow birds among the white blooms against a blue sky was unbeatable. At the end of the trail by the road we spotted a BARRED OWL and heard a WOOD THRUSH singing in the distance.
